I pay a mechanic to do it. It’s only $30, and doing it myself is such a pain.

Well you’re also wrong!

I pay my mechanic to change my oil as well. I live in an apartment, I don’t want the hassle of doing such a chore on a parking lot and doing it myself doesn’t make it better or significantly cheaper.

So I’m wrong.

The average temperature here in Feb was 1 F.

If people want to change their oil in that weather they are free to. I earn moneys so that I do not have to.

I can’t believe you’d do something like that.

It’s so easy to jack up your car, crawl under it, place your oil collection device, undo a bolt, undo the filter and then wait for it to drain, redo the bolt screw on a new filter, pour oil into the engine without getting it everywhere, lower your car back down and then package up the old oil and take it to be disposed without getting oil all over your car and yourself.

Shit, it can be 65 and sunny and I’ll still happily pay my mechanic to do it.

Well if you didn't pay him you'd end up in court charged with theft.

You're doing it wrong. You should be changing it yourself, using only free range oil from grass-fed dinosaurs and certified GMO free filters

Oh no I get my oil exclusively from free range dinosaur-fed dinosaurs.

Some people don’t grasp that one’s time can be valuable as well.

I had a mechanic change the engine oil, diff oil in both diffs, and transfer case oil as well. I have 3 kids (therefore little time for wrenching), no garage, and like thebigbossyboss said, it was really goddamn cold here this winter.

I use the juice from industrially farmed dinosaurs and my oil filters are made from the fur of cute, fluffy, genetically altered rabbits and hamsters.

YOU’RE NOT A BETTER PERSON THAN I AM!

if you remember, my reaction was initially “I dispose of my oil and filter at the dump” then after that I was like OK, I can deal with it, you don’t change your oil, I don’t fix my AC.

Isn’t “I just don’t want to do it” good enough?

Because I didn’t tell you that you ain’t a car enthusiast because you don’t like spilling oil down your arms? because, you’d rather assign a simple job to someone else to save you the hassle?

Shit I only do oil changes myself because I’m tight.

Yes, it is!

Personally, I would like to do my own oil changes. I enjoy wrenching and getting my hands dirty. I would like to teach these skills to my kids. But, for the reasons I mentioned, it’s not possible for me to do so.

I can’t even buy the oil to DIY for $30!

This is actually CAD $32...so like US $26.53

I have no qualms about paying for mine either. My garage is occupied by a car that hasn’t moved in five years and there are no flat paved surfaces within a quarter mile of my house where I’d be allowed to work on it, so into the shop it goes. Plus being that I work in the dealership it’s super convenient- just drop the keys off when I come in in the morning and pick the car up when I leave for the day.

Anything more than an oil change, though, and I make arrangements for a work space. Did brakes and a thermostat a couple weeks ago, no way I’m paying labor rate for something that easy to do myself.

Nah, no one told me I wasn’t a car enthusiast. Everyone just told me how easy it is to do.

Mostly, I’m giving you a hard time for no reason at all.

I have no excuse I have a garage I could easily change my oil in. I went to my mom’s heated garage when I did struts in the middle of winter.

that’s odd, I checked my trousers (lol pants) and you don’t appear to be giving me a hard time.

Well I’m pretty far away from you if you use the word trousers so give it some time it’ll get there.

I dunno but changing my oil is easy and I should feel bad.

Kinja'd!!! E. Julius > CalzoneGolem

Yes, but if you don’t enjoy it there’s no reason to do it. Even at my current lowly 20 year old intern wages, I’d make more money spending the equivalent amount of time working than I’d save changing my own oil. Not to mention I value my own time much higher than my employer.

If it’s something special and keeping it maintained yourself is all part of the fun, I can see changing your own oil. I’ll probably do my own oil changes on my motorcycle once I buy it. But for my perfectly ordinary DD Honda Civic? Why bother?

Well then I’m wrong too, but probably because I get my oil changed when I go to the dealer for scheduled maintenance, which apparently the internet has told me is absolutely wrong on multiple levels.

I’d like to inform you that it is easy to change your own oil.
